Dinosaur Explorers

Grades 1–2

Session 6 (AM) 

 

Fun Fact: Although the word dinosaur literally means "terrible lizard", dinosaurs are reptiles but they are not lizards.   Campers in this archaeological class will be transported millions of years into the past to explore the time when dinosaurs roamed the earth.  Young paleontologists will meet all kinds of dinosaurs, from the long-necked Brachiosaurus to the notorious T-Rex.  They will go on and archaeological dig, uncover fossils, and even create their own dinosaur!  

 

 

 

 

Animals Alive

Grades 1-2

Sessions 2 (AM) and 7 (PM)

 

Animals have a captivating effect on children, and we make full use of their fascination in this wildly entertaining class!  Campers will have an up close and personal experience with live animals, animal habitats, fossils, and more.  Our instructor has 40+ years of experience teaching with animals!  You can expect your camper to encounter animals such as snakes, mice, a tarantula, and more in a safe and informative environment. Students will learn about different species, ecosystems, and evolutionary concepts, such as adaptation and biodiversity. Campers with curiosity and a love of animals will enjoy spending time with our furry, scaly, and feathered friends! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Creative Coding NEW!

Grades 1–2

Sessions 2 (AM) and 3 (AM)

 

Campers in this fascinating class will learn the basic logic behind coding and computer programming through fun and age appropriate activities and programs.  They will discover how to make a computer listen to commands along with the basics of game making.   Campers will use Scratch software, logic, problem-solving skills, and creativity to create digital pictures and some amazing computer creations.

 

 

Into the Deep: Sea and Space Explorers

Grades 1-2

Session 4 (AM) 

 

Calling all explorers!  Let’s examine the final two mysterious frontiers:  the seas and outer space!  These final frontiers are vast spaces filled with unique creatures and natural wonders that are just waiting to be uncovered and explored.  Campers will take an expedition to the mysterious world that thrives under the sea.  From shallow coral reefs to the darkest depths, campers will learn all about our oceans and the unique creatures that lie within.  Campers will also journey through the cosmos to discover planets, asteroids, stars, black holes, and more!  This exciting class will also offer a variety of interactive projects and lively activities! 

 

Building with LEGO

Grades 1-2

Sessions 1 (PM), 4 (PM) and 7 (PM)

Nothing brings out creativity, ingenuity, and problem-solving abilities like LEGO building and design.  On top of all that, it’s really fun!  Campers will learn the application of engineering, technology, and art concepts all while having fun working both individually and in teams to build cool LEGO projects.   Campers will have time for creative free-building, too!

 

 

 

 

It’s Electric 

Grades 1-2

Session 2 (AM) 

 

The power of electricity!  In this class, campers will delve into this wondrous world of protons and electrons that powers everything around us, from street lights to our cell phones.  Through experiments and hand-on activities, campers will learn about static and current electricity, electromagnets, and even make batteries and circuits.  But no worries - we won’t be flying kites with keys in the rain! *Material Fee: $25 (Two-Week Session), $15 (One-Week Session).

 

Mad Scientists 
Grades 1–2

Sessions 4 (PM) and 6 (PM)

 

Summer at Norwood’s Mad Scientists will satisfy their scientific curiosity through hands-on experiments, creative science tricks, and enlightening activities. Any camper with an interest in science and a passion for discovery is sure to love this popular program. Key scientific concepts will be demonstrated through age-appropriate learning and activities. What extra materials can be added to make the highest bubble tower? Why do different gasses make balloons fall at different speeds? What happens when Mentos are added to soda? Campers will become Mad Scientists when they conduct these and many other wild experiments! *Material Fee: $25 (Two-Week Session), $15 (One-Week Session).

 

 

 

Minecraft: Intro to Mod Creation NEW!

Grades 1-2

Session 6 (AM)

In this junior Minecraft camp, young campers will learn how to use Java (programming language) to make
custom mods such as the amazing axe that shoots fireballs, as well an awesome repulsion shield that
throws enemies into the air. The ultimate goal of this program is to ensure campers are having fun while
learning new concepts to progress their learning and build confidence coding, so they may prepare for the
next learning opportunity in the future, all while having fun!

 

 

Slime Time 

Grades 1-2

Session 3 (PM)

Campers in this super fun class will never hear the words, “Stop making a mess.”  On the contrary, messy experiments is what “Slime Time” is all about!  Campers will create slime, gak, and other mucky concoctions, they’ll learn why materials react the way they do, and they’ll discover both practical and amusing uses for our messy creations.  Some call it gross, but we call it fun!

 

 

Crazy Chemistry NEW!

Grades 1-2

Session 5 (PM)

In this offering, young scientists will watch concoctions fizz, foam, bubble, and BOOM as they discover the fundamentals of chemistry. Through experimentation and observation, campers will learn about acids and bases, the way different mixtures affect reactions, and the ways in which they interact with chemistry throughout their daily lives. Whether constructing a volcano, making water glow, creating steam, or experimenting with fire, campers will connect science to real-world situations while having a superlative time.  *Material Fee: $25 (Two-Week Session), $15 (One-Week Session).

 

 

Nature Guardians NEW!

Grades 1-2

Session 1 (PM) and 5 (AM)

Using Norwood’s beautiful campus, campers will learn about nature and the environment with an emphasis on the relationship between humans and the natural world.  Campers will be challenged to find ways in which they can help protect our environment while learning about the animals, plants, ecosystems, and the abundant beauty right outside our doors here at Norwood and beyond!

 

 

Jr Drone Pilot Academy NEW!

Grades 1-2

Session 1 (AM)

Designed for younger campers with little to no experience flying drones, this program fully immerses campers into
an exciting narrative and experience. The mission: Captain Droby and her crew (campers) are exploring a
faraway planet to discover new energy resources. The challenge: a colony of pesky aliens who will do anything to
disrupt Captain Droby’s crew. To conquer the aliens, campers will use a variety of flying, jumping, and rolling
drones to navigate their way around the planet and successfully make it back to the mothership. Drobots use the safest and most reliable drone products on the market for enhanced safety and most of all, fun. Campers will
learn all of the safety measures as they prepare to learn the basics of drone technology before taking to the air.
Join our professional counselors for a week filled with excitement, games, and learning. All campers go home
with plenty of Drobots keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer.

 

 

Rocks Rock!

Grades 1-2

Session 1 (AM)

 

From minerals and fossils to volcanoes and magma, this class will take an exciting look at the world of geology.  Through hands-on activities, campers will take a close look at what lies beneath our feet to gain clues about the world we live in.  Campers will learn about and analyze various varieties of rocks and minerals by exploring the natural areas of Norwood’s 38-acre campus.  Campers will even examine the volatile world of plate tectonics and earthquakes.  This summer, campers will see why rocks rock!

 

 

 

Young Builders

Grades 1-2

Session 5 (AM)

Calling all budding architects and engineers!  This is the class for you!  Campers will learn basic concepts of structure, design, and architecture, all while having fun building projects with a variety of materials, from blocks and magna tiles to recycled materials.  They will work both as a team and individually to create structures and objects by setting goals and overcoming challenges.   There will be time for creative free-building, too! 

 

 

 

Bug's Life NEW!

Grades 1-2

Session 2 (AM)

Did you know that most people think spiders are insects?  They’re not!   Campers in this creepy, crawly class will learn why spiders are arachnids, not insects, and all sorts of additional fun facts about the insect world. This class will explore several types of insects as campers participate in hands-on exploration to learn about the life-cycles, anatomies, and history of our wonderful bug friends!  

 

 

 
 

Inventor’s Lab

Grades 3–5

Session 3 (PM), 5 (PM) and 6 (PM)

 

Does your child like to build and design big ideas?  This class encourages campers to dream, tinker, and make discoveries!  Inventor’s Lab will explore the inventing process and examine how ideas are transformed and built into prototypes. We will supply the materials, guidance, and supervision.  Campers will supply the ingenuity and creativity as they design and build their own invention.  The next big idea might just come from your camper in Summer at Norwood’s Inventor’s Lab! 

 

Coding Lab NEW!

Grades 3-5

Session 5 (PM)

Let’s think like software engineers!  This class is for campers who enjoy computers and computer games, and who want to learn how they are made.  We’ll also learn how we “talk” to computers, and we’ll create code to animate, build characters, and tell stories through fun, project-based learning.  This class works for campers of all experience levels, so come code with us! 

 

 

Build to Blast

Grades 3 - 5

Sessions 1 (PM) and 3 (AM)

 

What’s more fun than building your own structure? Smashing it? Knocking it over? Blowing it up!  Campers will be able to act on their instinctual need to learn from destruction. Using various building materials such as Legos, blocks, and recyclables; campers not only work to construct but more importantly create innovative ways to destroy their creations! Campers are encouraged to obliterate these buildings, towers, bridges, vehicles and more. Strategy introduced, both in the building aspect and the smashing aspect!  Campers are always promoted to build again, but when will they ever be encouraged to smash it again!

Drone Building and Racing

Grades 3-5

Sessions 4 (AM) and 7 (AM) 

Taught by the experienced professionals at DEILAB, this class is specifically designed for both the novice and experienced drone enthusiasts. Campers will begin by learning basic maneuvers and focus point of view to conquer various missions and challenges.  Drone safety and the social responsibilities of flying drones are included in this program.  Campers will also use their knowledge learned to compete in team flight races at the culmination of the program.  The program has been designed to encourage and build: fun, teamwork, curiosity, critical thinking, courage, and creativity!

 

 

 

LEGO Design

Grades 3-5

Sessions 1 (AM), 4 (AM), and 7 (AM)

Robotics: Battlebots 
Grades 3–5

Sessions 7 (PM)

 

Get ready to battle!  In this exciting class, teams of  children will compete head-to-head in designing, battling, and re-designing LEGO robots. They will challenge other winning teams and earn points for each victory. Participants experience the thrill of leading and innovating in a competitive sport of the mind while enhancing analytical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. 

Edison Electric NEW!

Up, up, and away!  Find your inner Wright brother!  In this exciting new class, campers will learn about the principles of flight.  They will build all types of flying objects, such as paper airplanes, gliders, parachutes, boomerangs, and more!  They will then conduct flight tests and experiment with how to make things soar through the air!

 

Minecraft: Mod Creation NEW!

Grades 3-5

Session 6 (PM)

In this creative camp, students will create their own custom mobs (Minecraft character models) and
then use AI (artificial intelligence) programming to teach the mobs how to react in interesting
situations.

 

 

Hidden Worlds NEW!

Grades 3-5

If ancient people didn’t leave written records, how do we know what food they ate, what clothes they wore, what games they played?  Have you ever wondered what a dinosaur really looked like or what shark’s tooth tells us? In this fascinating class, campers will become archeological scientists as they discover the past through artifacts, art, fossils, and stories.   Let’s “dig up” some interesting information about the people, animals, and civilizations that came before us.

 

 

Robotics
Grades 3–5

Sessions 4 (PM) 

Using Lego Mindstorm NXT, campers will learn the basics of designing, building, and programming robots. They will be challenged to construct robots that will be able to succeed at a variety of tasks, including completing a maze and surviving an obstacle course. Can your camper build a robot that will survive?  Join us to find out! *Material Fee: $25 (Two-Week Session), $15 (One-Week Session).

Ultimate Drone Obstacle Challenge NEW!

Grades 3-5

Session 2 (PM)

This action-packed program is specifically designed for both the novice and experienced drone enthusiasts.
Full of excitement, teamwork, learning, and fun, campers enjoy one of the world’s fastest growing sports,
Drone Obstacle Course Racing. Throughout the week, campers learn about the basic safety of drone flying
and the history behind drone racing as a sport. As the week progresses, campers will advance through
various skill challenges, learning how to perform assorted exercises and maneuvers to become familiar with
the drone’s speed and agility. Campers will use iPads and remote controls to pitch, yaw and roll their
drones through some of Drobots’ most daring obstacle courses. Participants will utilize their creative minds
to help design the obstacle layout and then build the obstacle course in preparation for the camp’s final
activity and competition.

 

Structural Design

Grades 3–6

Sessions 2 (PM) and 6 (AM)

 

This class is perfect for campers who love to combine art with math!  Campers will study architecture and examine the development of an architectural structure.  They will plan what type of architectural structure they would like to create, including location and what the structure will be used for.  Campers will then draft and design their own structure, choose materials to create their own full model architectural structure, and complete a final design of their structure.

 

Video Game Design

Grades 3–6

Session 2 (PM)

 

There is no such thing as too much computer time in this class, designed for campers who love gaming and want to create their own video games.  Campers will learn the logic behind computer programming and game making using software such as Scratch. They will then create their own versions of classic games like Pong and Galaga.  This class provides a great way for campers to build a foundation in computer science while having fun creating and gaming!

Graphic Design

Grades 5–8

Session 4 (PM) and 7 (AM)

 

Campers can combine their love of art and computers in this stimulating class. Using innovative programs like, Adobe, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and others, campers will bring their creativity to life and showcase it on a digital canvas.  They will also develop an impressive portfolio to take home to share!

 

STEM Challenge
Grades 5-8

Session 2 (AM)

In STEM Challenge, campers will use the Engineering Design Process to build prototypes as solutions to daily design challenges.  Once briefed with the design challenge, campers will spend their time trying to build a successful solution with the materials that have been provided.  Campers will learn how to ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve their designs as well as learn to work in teams and deal with constraints.  This class is perfect for the budding engineer!
