Creative Kids Drama

Junior Day 3-5 years old

Instructor:  Creative Kids Drama

Explore hand-sewing, embroidery, knitting, weaving, needle-felting and more by creating fun, one-of-a-kind fiber arts projects. Students are guided by patient and skilled instructors to embrace their imagination and harness their potential through creation. Fiber Arts meets each student where they are on their creative journey, whether they are first-time creators or returners. Each week, campers have the opportunity to develop new skills and tackle new challenges with our rotating curriculum of projects. *Material Fee: $25 (Two-Week Session), $15 (One-Week Session).

 

 

 

 

 

I Spy NEW!

Grades 1–2

Session 7 (PM)

Calling all secret agents! Learn what it takes to become a world-class spy in this undercover class.  Campers will explore the world’s different spy agencies and create their own spy personas, conduct surveillance, uncover secrets, and break secret codes. 

 

 

Chess
Grades 1-2

Sessions 1 (PM), 2 (AM) and 3 (AM)

 

Research has shown that chess helps children develop analytical and decision making skills.  Kids will tell you that it’s fun!  No matter what their skill level, this enriching class will teach campers the fundamentals and strategies of chess through games, puzzles, challenging activities, and actual chess matches.  Chess will energize your camper’s creative thinking skills and create a lifelong hobby!  It’s your move!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jedi Knight Training

Grades 1–2

Session 7 (AM)

 

This class is perfect for campers with an interest in sci-fi and adventure!  Campers in this active class will train in the ways of the force to grow from Padawan to a Jedi Knight by practicing safe sword training to master the light saber, agility training, responsibility, and the power of focus.  We will take breaks from training to play Star Wars-related games.  May the force be with you!

 

 

 

Mystifying Magic

Grades 1-2

Sessions 3 (PM), 6 (PM), and 7 (PM) 

“Now you see it. Now you don’t.” This summer campers can amaze their friends and families by learning to perform mystifying magical effects. They will learn the secrets behind a magician’s “bag of tricks” using everyday objects as well as exciting props!  Practice and performance will be incorporated on a daily basis. In addition to learning the secrets of performing magic, your camper will study illusions performed by world renowned professional magicians.

 

 

 

Karate

Grades 1–2

Session 4 (AM) and  5 (PM)

 

Karate is a well-rounded mixed martial arts self-defense program that combines exciting instruction with practical, effective techniques. Taught by Kaizen Karate, students will learn to guard and protect themselves whether it be standing up, close quarters, or on the ground. Discipline, respect, and confidence are an integral part of this class. Street smarts, de-escalation, and bully-conflict resolution are incorporated. Each child will learn essential kicks, punches, and blocks, along with self-defense elbow and knee strikes. All techniques are always practiced on equipment held by the instructor, never student-to-student. Most importantly, your child will gain confidence in themselves and their ability to succeed.

 

 

 

 

National Treasure Hunters 

Grades 1–2

Session 1 (AM)

Welcome the summer on the Norwood 38-acre campus with this Independence Day themed class. Campers become investigative clue seekers! Create decoders, secret maps, treasure loot to boot! Combine historical investigations with coding puzzles and maps to uncover the hidden mysteries to our own country!  

Free Swim

Grades 1 – 5

Sessions 2 (PM), 3 (PM), 4 (PM), and 5 (PM)

What better way to spend the summer than swimming at the pool!  Campers and experienced staff will take a Norwood bus to a local pool for an afternoon of fun and supervised swim time.  This is not a swim lesson, but rather a wonderful opportunity for campers to splash and play in the sun with friends.  Staff will administer a swim test on the first day to assess swimming ability.  The ability to swim is encouraged but not mandatory, as the pool has a shallow end and always has lifeguards on duty.

 

 

Kids Cook

Grades 1–3

Sessions 1 (PM), 2 (PM), 4 (AM), 5 (PM), 6 (AM), and 7 (AM)

Kids Cook is an entry-level cooking class held in our Norwood School kitchen. Campers of all culinary expertise learn the basics of mastering styles of proper knife skills, temperature control and proper food handling. Campers collaborate to create recipes for taste testing and critiquing as well as work with a Norwood culinary cooking instructor to make kid’s favorites daily from Tapas, Sauces, and Pastas to Cupcakes, Crepes and Cookies. Your culinary artist will create a signature recipe to trade with the other chefs as well as combine all the weekly recipes into one awesome cookbook! Mix up some summer memories with Kids Cook.  (Note: All recipes and projects in the class will be meat and peanut-free) *Material Fee: $25 (Two-Week Session), $15 (One-Week Session).

 

Sports and Games
Grades 1–3

In this popular offering, campers will explore teamwork, creativity, and cooperative activities by learning the basic elements of a variety of sports and games. Perfect for the energetic camper, this class will play sports such as basketball and soccer, active games such as capture the flag and ultimate dodge ball, and board or card games in a classroom setting. Campers are sure to love playing the camp favorite Ga Ga Ball in Summer at Norwood’s new Ga Ga pit.  This is an active class in which campers will work together while learning to utilize their individual strengths and abilities. Sports + Games = Fabulous Fun!

En Garde! Calling all pirates, musketeers and Jedi! Fencing is the art of mastering the épée with balance, skill and coordination. Taught by Nazlymov Fencing, Campers will learn about the sport of fencing, the art of effective decision-making and the point system to the skill. Like any other sport or martial arts, accomplishments build self-confidence, self-discipline, and problem solving skills.

Mission Impossible
Grades 3–6

Your campers’ mission, should they choose to accept it, is to delve into the world of espionage in this compelling class.  Young secret agents-in-training will learn an array of spy tactics including decoding, elusive and evasive action, and mastering the art of disguise.  They will then put their training into action to solve challenges before embarking on one final mission! 

 

 

 

Party Planning

Grades 3-5

Session 7 (AM) 

What’s more fun than a party?   In this lively class, campers will plan and throw a party for their friends at Summer at Norwood.  They will work as a group, but they’ll also have individual roles as well.  Campers will learn how to plan every aspect of a fun event, including picking a theme, the music, decorations, games to play, food to buy or make, etc.  They will also advertise their party to other campers.  At the end of the session, campers will hold their party for all to enjoy!

Extra, Extra!  In addition to other important basics of news reporting and journalism, budding journalists will learn how to implement the critical five W’s of good reporting: Who, What, When, Where, and Why.  Campers will report on events at camp, interview campers and staff, and create an actual news publication! 

 

 

 

Who Done It?

Grades 3–5

Session 1 (PM) and 6 (PM)

 

It’s an unsolved mystery! This class is especially designed for mystery-loving, problem-solving amateur detectives. By collecting information, talking to witnesses and informants, and collecting evidence, campers will solve Norwood mysteries each day.  Become a part of the story in this choose-your-own adventure!   Let’s solve some mysteries together!

 

Lights, Camera, Action!

Grades 3-5

Session 5 (AM)


Our future actors, producers, and directors will love this class.  Campers will run through the process of filming, acting, editing, and creating a movie from start to finish.  Whether campers like being in the spot light or behind the scenes making the action happen, they’ll love joining in the magic of making movies come to life in this class!

 

 

 

Chefs in Training 

Grades 4–8

Sessions 1 (AM), 2 (AM), 4 (PM), 5 (AM), 6 (PM), and 7 (PM)

 

Chefs in Training is a completely interactive class, where young culinary masters will learn many of the basics of cooking, such as how to read and reference a recipe, proper measuring and knife skills, as well as cooking techniques such as baking, grilling, and sautéing. Campers collaborate to create recipes for taste testing and critiquing as well as work with a Norwood culinary cooking instructor to recreate recipes from Tapas, Sauces, and Pastas to Cupcakes, Crepes and Cookies. Game On: Sports and Beyond

Offering a great mix of both traditional and non-traditional games, Game On is the perfect class for campers who want to have fun, gain confidence, and keep moving! Campers will develop and hone their individual and team skills while playing sports such as flag football, soccer, basketball, or lacrosse. They will also learn and engage in fun games like Ultimate Frisbee, Bowling, Bocce Ball, and fun card games. Campers are sure to love playing the camp favorite Ga Ga Ball in Summer at Norwood’s Ga Ga pit.  Teamwork and sportsmanship are emphasized and campers will even be able to steer the direction of the class as they decide as a group which sports and games they would like to try!

Do you have an idea that will take the world by storm? This is the class for campers who have big ideas and who want to learn how to turn them into a business.  Campers will write a business plan, create advertising, make business cards, and more.  And just like on the show, campers will pitch their ideas to “Sharks” at the end of the camp week.

 

Up to the Challenge

Grades 4-8

Session 3 (PM)

This teacher-guided class is a great way for kids to employ fun, new challenges requiring both the mind and the body.  Challenges will involve a mix of team or group and individual, non-competitive, “minute-to-win-it” style athletic contests, puzzles, riddles, and more.  Some examples include obstacle courses, you have a minute to knock a quarter off of a two-liter bottle by bouncing a ping pong ball, how many words can your team create using the letters in “Summer at Norwood”?  Are you… up to the challenge?

 

 

 

 

Future Leaders

Grades 5 - 8

Sessions 1 (AM) and 7 (AM)

 

It is said that “a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”.  This interactive class will teach our older campers the skills and principals it takes to be an effective leader through a combination of training and experience.  Our young leaders will learn the values of cooperation, compromise, and trust through fun team building activities and games.  Campers will also receive training that will be an asset no matter what path they choose in the future.  Formal CPR/First Aid certification is a must for anyone with aspirations of babysitting, and an impressive asset to include in any young person’s toolbox as they embark on their professional future.  Campers will also embark on resume writing training and mock interviews, to help them be prepared for any situation.  Our leaders will get the chance to put their training in action, leading activities for younger Summer at Norwood campers and acting as role models and teachers themselves.  This class will give campers a heightened sense of responsibility, the training necessary to be an asset to any organization or household, and some new friends made along the way. 

Summer Spa NEW!
Grades 5–8

Sessions 1 (PM)

In this refreshing, revitalizing class, campers will learn how to create body care and beauty products such as facial scrubs, lotions, and more.   Campers will also explore some mindfulness techniques through short, guided meditations and crafts like stress balls and other tension-relieving tools.   Start relaxing your way into summer with us!

 

Archery
Grades 5–8

Sessions 2 (AM), and 6 (AM)

 

Katniss Everdeen watch out, our Summer at Norwood archers are here!  This class will explore the basics of archery in an exciting and interactive way.  Using new, specially ordered for students compound bows, our campers will learn safety first as well as the techniques behind stance, notching, setting, drawing, aiming, shooting, and follow through. Campers will participate in friendly competition and games as they learn how to hit the bull’s eye!
