Ready for a big adventure?! In each Creative Kids Drama class a professional teaching artist will guide young actors through an exciting dramatization of a children's tale. We will use our Acting Tools (Voice, Body, and Imagination) to perform stories together. Our stories come from all around the world! We will play fun drama games, do creative movement activities, and share our ideas for dialogue as we turn ourselves into the characters from each story. Join us for this fun Drama journey!

In Singin' and Stories a professional teaching artist will lead children on an exploration of a story through creative movement and song. Each class features easy-to-learn songs, simple instruments, finger plays, and games all based on a theme inspired by a picture book. The class is highly interactive and tons of fun!

 

A few supplies would be fun, although they are optional, not necessary: 

1) A small scarf (or handkerchief or bandana)

2) Two rhythm sticks/drum sticks (or anything that can be tapped together such as two spoons)

3) A rattle, shaker, tambourine, maraca, jingle bell, etc.

Join us for a fantastic yoga adventure as we travel to the beach, the farm, the circus, outer space, and beyond!  Each class, we will travel to a new location using stories, music, movement, and our creativity!  Yoga poses and deep breathing exercises will be introduced and incorporated into every adventure.  Class will end with a calming story & relaxation. This class is the perfect way to introduce yoga to your little one!  

 

Act It Out

Grades 3-5

Session 2 (July 13-17) - Block B (11:00am-12:00pm)

Join us for Act It Out Drama class! In each class students learn the basics of acting. Vocal work, creative movement, and dramatic improvisation skills are taught through theatre games and dramatization of age-appropriate myths, legends, and folk tales. Act it Out! is great for students who are new to drama as well as those who want to improve existing acting skills. Each class is taught by a professional teaching artist and is designed to build creativity and self-esteem. It's also tons of fun!

Advanced Chess

Aspiring Fashionistas

 

Grades 6-8

Session 6 (August 10-14) - Block C (1:30pm-2:30pm)

 

In this “glam” program for boys and girls, campers gain knowledge of the fashion industry and develop skills in fashion design, fashion marketing, fashion journalism and branding. Campers explore popular brands, analyze industry trends (e.g., athleisure), design various articles of clothing, define their own brand, outline a layout for their favorite store, explore careers in fashion and more!

Materials needed: Pencil, paper, crayons, ruler, optional sketch booklet. In addition, families will be emailed several PDFs to print.

Budding Entrepreneurs

 

Grades 3-5

Session 3 (July 20-24), Block C (1:30pm-2:30pm),

 

If you like “Shark Tank,” this interactive online camp is for you! Join other intrepid campers and learn what it takes to launch your own business. Campers build self-confidence while developing business skills in strategy, marketing and finance. They select a business idea, learn to develop a business plan and make a pitch presentation on the last day. Campers even create a real website and design their own business cards!

Calligraphy

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting.  Campers will get to express their creativity through learning this age-old technique.  If you have a camper who wants to add special a flourish to their handwritten projects, this class is the perfect place to start!

Hooray MATH!!  Campers Count will explore the realm of mathematics through real-life simulations, math games, and creative manipulatives. This class allows campers to improve their math skills in a collaborative and entertaining environment by blending mathematic concepts with fun and adventure.

Chess

Character Study

We’ll dive into classic children’s read alouds and “become” the characters in the story! Let’s dress up and turn our Zoom screen into an interactive story time center. After reading, we will talk about character traits and make text connections while we write and draw.

Coding Academy

 

Grades 6-8

Session 6 (August 10-14) - Block B (11:00am-12:30pm)

Coding is it's own language!  This popular academy teaches campers the logic behind computer programming. With a software called Scratch, campers will use logic, problem-solving skills, and creativity to make their own versions of classic games such as Pong, Snake, and Galaga. During the camp, campers will develop an understanding of many essential concepts behind coding and build a foundation in computer science. Get a jump start on the coding and programming revolution to come!

Cyber Forensics

 

Grades 6-8

Cyber-Forensic STEM Academy is a summer workshop that allows campers the opportunity to expand their knowledge of STEM and cyber-security topics. This experience provides hands- on activities in which students will learn about passwords, pass- pattern, digital evidences, forensic science, cyber defense, and cyber ethics.

Drawing Out the Artist Within

Grades 6-8

This immersive class will allow campers will learn, explore, and investigate the art of drawing. The class will on concepts and reference master works of drawing, painting, and sculpture from the finest collections in the world.   Campers will enjoy learning and exploring drawing techniques by creating their own creative works of art.

Disney Dreams

& Movie Scenes

Session 4 (July 27-31) - Block A (9:30am-10:30am)

 

Do you love Disney? Have you memorized every line from Frozen, Frozen 2 and Shrek the Musical? Then this virtual camp is perfect for you! Choose from a selection of Disney films, animated or live action and select a 1 Minute Monologue to perform. Campers will work on performance selection with an instructor to delve into character analysis and best practices for a budding actor or actress. The week will culminate in a memorized acting showcase performance via Zoom on the last day of camp.

Dungeons and Dragons

Curious about the world of Dungeons and Dragons? Campers will get to learn about character creation and play through a series of short adventures to learn the basics of exploration, interaction, and combat in the world of D&D. Build a half-orc barbarian or a gnome wizard and start rolling your dice to battle monsters, solve puzzles, and explore exciting new worlds!

Fun with Functions

Fun with Functions will help adolescents campers confidence and skill in pre-algebra and early algebraic concepts.  Topics will include: Mastering Equations and Inequalities, Understanding Linear Functions, Graphing on the Coordinate Plane, and Solving Word-Problems.  Campers will explore the algebraic world through fun activities and creative outlets.

Future CEOs

How cool would it be for you to be the boss of Apple or Amazon for a day? In this unique online leadership camp, you can! Campers act as CEOs for leading companies and work in groups to make strategic recommendations to address real business issues at popular companies like Apple, Amazon, Coke and Under Armour. Campers enhance their problem-solving skills, develop business savvy and cultivate a strategic mindset as future leaders!

Gaming Galore

Monopoly, Sorry, Clue!  Campers will not only get to play board games in this brand-new class, but they will also design and create their own! This class will allow campers to learn through play and explore teamwork and sportsmanship.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop by Tippi Toes® is the perfect class for 3rd to 5th graders who want to dance, stay active and learn how to freestyle in the comfort of their own home. This class focuses on rhythm, musicality and basic footwork. Students will develop coordination, body awareness, build self-esteem and confidence in this fun, executing and energetic class. Our Hip Hop class begins with warm-ups and stretching and then quickly moves into learning jazz and hip hop choreography.

Karate

Karate is a well-rounded mixed martial arts self-defense program that combines exciting instruction with practical, effective techniques. Taught by Kaizen Karate, students will learn to guard and protect themselves whether it be standing up, close quarters, or on the ground. Discipline, respect, and confidence are an integral part of this class. Street smarts, de-escalation, and bully-conflict resolution are incorporated. Each child will learn essential kicks, punches, and blocks, along with self-defense elbow and knee strikes. All techniques are always practiced on equipment held by the instructor, never student-to-student. Most importantly, your child will gain confidence in themselves and their ability to succeed.

Learning through Silliness

It's a fact of life, kids love to get goofy. And getting goofy can be great for the grey matter! How quickly can you learn your name backwards? Can you build a plastic spoon catapult? What do the lines on your palm say when You are the one drawing them?! And every kid should know how to make a solid paper airplane or fortune teller. In Childish Fun and Immaturity we learn some of the science behind the topics that make us giggle, and some of the engineering to bring those silly ideas into reality.

This dynamic class will encourage students to hone their math skills by playing games and solving creative problems in an Olympic-like atmosphere. Working independently and in groups, campers will be challenged to use their math skills to compete in a range of math-themed events and contests!  “Mathletes” of all skill levels are welcome and will be stimulated to develop a new enthusiasm for problem-solving.

Mix Up Art

Campers will create a series of mixed media and digital art projects, using more than one artistic medium. Projects might include creative collages, found object sculptures, and digital comic strips.

MusicStart® Guitar

Grades 6-8

Session 3 (July 20-24) - Block C (1:30pm-2:30pm)

 

Learn the basics and foundations of playing the guitar.  Technique, scales, chords, melodies, and songs will all be covered.  We promise to teach you as many real songs as possible!  This class is a great introduction for students who might later proceed to a private teacher.  We will get your hands picking, strumming, and fretting.

Materials needed: Use a guitar you already own or we recommend First Act guitars online as an inexpensive solution. Electric or acoustic guitar is OK (no amplifier required).

 

MusicStart® Keyboard

 

Grades 1-2

Session 3 (July 20-24) - Block B (11:00am-12:00pm)

 

MusicStart® is a keyboard-based music learning system that balances fun and development of skills.  Using familiar songs, it teaches all the necessary basics to get started playing music.  It has 4 instructive Attachments (overlays) that vary the challenge from color matching to letter matching to note matching and reading standard musical notation.  Online 5 min demo video at beginmusic.com

“Now you see it. Now you don’t.” This summer campers can amaze their friends and families by learning to perform mystifying magical effects. They will learn the secrets behind a magician’s “bag of tricks” using everyday objects as well as exciting props!  Practice and performance will be incorporated on a daily basis. In addition to learning the secrets of performing magic, your camper will study illusions performed by world renowned professional magicians.

Poetry Slam Fest

Grades 6-8

Session 6 (August 10-14) - Block A (9:30am-10:30am)

This amazing virtual camp is perfect for aspiring poets, writers and deep thinkers! Participants will compose an original and age appropriate 1-2 minute poem and explore the medium of spoken verse. Poets may add music to enhance their selections. Memorization of poems not required. Poems will be performed during a poetry slam event on the last day of camp via Zoom

Poms & Hip Hop

6th to 8th graders will have a blast moving and grooving to the beat while engaging in not only one but two dance styles – Pom and Hip Hop by Tippi Toes®! Campers will learn a variety of hip hop steps and choreography and have the opportunity to freestyle their own personal moves and work together with other campers to choreograph their own combinations! They will also be introduced to jazz and hip hop techniques while including the sharp synchronized movements and visual effects of working with pom poms.

Pop Stars Dance

Get ready to turn your living room into a stage and dance like your favorite pop stars! In this high energy, age-appropriate class, students in 1st & 2nd grades will learn popular jazz techniques including turns, jumps and kicks that they see their favorite pop stars doing! Teachers will teach combos and choreography to upbeat, popular music with a great dance beat!

Puppet Show

In this class, campers will learn about shadows, make our own puppets, and find our creative side to collaboratively write a puppet show script. We will add light & sound effects and perform the puppet show at the end of the session.

Campers will focus on the FUNdamentals of reading in this academic support class. Reading Booster is designed to reinforce key concepts and skills in reading through academic games, puzzles, and activities. Each class is focused on specific grades so campers will receive specialized attention, giving them the support and confidence they’ll need to thrive in the upcoming school year.

School Prep

School Prep is designed to support campers’ transition back into academic instruction through entertaining activities and lessons. Time is spent on a range of academic subjects, including but not limited to language arts, math, and science.  Students are taught skills and techniques that will have them ready for the next school year. Whether your camper wants additional support or just wants to expand his or her knowledge, this class will encourage all campers to “stay fresh” with their school skills.

Scratch Programming

Grades 3-5

Let’s think like software engineers!  This class is for campers who enjoy computers and computer games, and who want to learn how they are made.  We’ll also learn how we “talk” to computers, and we’ll create code to animate, build characters, and tell stories through fun, project-based learning.  This class works for campers of all experience levels, so come code with us!

Sign Language

Grades 3-5

Session 3 (July 20-24) - Block A (9:30am-10:30am)

 

Over half a million Americans speak Sign Language, many whom are hearing abled. Join Coach Charlie as he teaches the very basics of sign language using visual aids and multi-media. Campers will learn how to sign their names after learning the alphabet, and how to communicate simple sentences and common phrases.

String Orchestra Camp

*Note: This class is 2 hours*

Norwood School's very own string teachers will be leading this unique virtual camp that is open to string instrument players who play the violin, viola, cello, or bass.  The class is geared towards campers who have will be joining their school orchestra in the fall and/or those who have been playing in their school orchestra for at least a year.  The class will work on their skills, play games, and create a recording project at the end of the week!

DEILAB’s virtual robotics and coding blends Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math into a exciting project and challenge based class. DEILAB brings the excitement of robotics to students to coding through CoderZ. This instructor-led program along with the platform enables students to learn how to code virtual robots and participate in gamified missions online.

Want to be the next big thing in the world of finance? Then this class is for you! We will explore the world of finance, banking, and budgeting though immersive activities.   Campers will even have a chance to learn how to create and pitch their own business plan!

Yoga Adventures

Grades 1-2

Session 4 (July 27-31) - Block C (1:30pm-2:30pm)

Chill out and find inner peace in this fun and relaxing yoga class created especially for kids! Campers will learn yoga poses, sun salutations, breathing exercises, meditation, and relaxation techniques. Each day will include a special theme including: stuffed animal yoga, pajama party yoga, yoga games and more!  Class ends with a period of deep relaxation that will leave your child feeling calm and peaceful all day long!

Young Debaters

Grades 6-8

Campers learn the art of persuasion and develop their debating skills in a supportive environment, including developing arguments, issuing rebuttals, rebuilding their case and drafting closing arguments. Virtual breakout rooms enable teamwork and allow groups to prepare their strategy. Students learn to think on their feet and enhance their public-speaking skills, gaining self-confidence in the process.

Young Shakespeare

Calling all playwrights! In this exciting new class, campers will get to stretch their creativity and learn about the elements that make up a play and how to create a manuscript.  Each camper will develop and write their own 10-minute play. On the last day of the session, campers will get to share their creation!
