Designed specifically for middle school aged campers, these unique full-day academies deliver an immersive and hands-on experience in a specific area of concentration. Each one-week Middle School Academy allows campers to build skills and confidence in their favorite interest!  Click on each week to find the descriptions below.

Band Camp
(rising 4th-8th grade)
June 17-21
 (No camp June 19)

​Directed by Norwood's Own Mr. Cunliffe!   

The Norwood Band Camp is open to campers who have completed at least one full calendar year of an ensemble, band or private lesson instruction.  Each day campers will read and perform music of various styles from classical to rock and will also work on breathing exercises, scales and ensemble rehearsal techniques. Director Cunliffe brings to his craft a unique experience in Qigong, meditation and mindfulness training, which enhances his teaching style and promotes a relaxed and fun atmosphere. A concert demonstrating our week's work will be presented on the final day of camp. 

No audition is required, and we accept instrumentalists who play woodwinds, brass, percussion and electric bass.  All participants, except percussionists, are required to bring their own instrument and supplies such as reeds, mouthpiece, valve oil, slide cream, drum sticks and cork grease.

Dungeons & Dragons

Curious about the world of Dungeons and Dragons? Campers will learn about character creation and play through a series of short adventures to learn the basics of exploration, interaction, and combat in the world of D&D. Build a half-orc barbarian or a gnome wizard and start rolling your dice to battle monsters, solve puzzles, and explore exciting new worlds!​

For students who are interested in world-building and taking on the role of Game Master, we are excited to offer activities geared toward learning those skills as well. These may include home-brewing monsters, running combat, advanced character creation, an overview of settings and planes, map-making, improvising non-player characters (NPCs), how to prepare for sessions, and more.

Sewing Academy

The LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime Robotics Set, part of the LEGO® Learning System, is the go-to STEAM learning tool for grade 5-8 campers. Combining colorful LEGO building elements, easy-to-use hardware, and coding languages based on Scratch, SPIKE Prime continuously engages campers through playful learning activities to think critically and solve complex problems, regardless of their learning level. From easy-entry projects to limitless creative design possibilities, with opportunity to advance their projects to text-based coding with Python, SPIKE Prime helps campers learn the essential STEAM and 21st century skills needed to become the innovative minds of tomorrow... while having fun!  All devices for this academy are provided by Summer at Norwood.

Digital Art and Design Academy
July 8-12

Explore the wonderful possibilities of digital art and design this summer!  Middle School campers will use the computer to visually communicate their ideas through their artwork.  This class will explore the elements of art and principles of design to understand the importance of visual composition and improve campers’ overall creative thinking skills.  Using Adobe software, campers will explore digital art, photo manipulation, graphic design, and animation to create their own digital projects. All devices for this academy are provided by Summer at Norwood.

Theater and Improv Academy
July 8-12

Run by Vineyard App Camp! 

Is your camper passionate about acting and improving their theatrical skills? Join our Theater and Improv (Yes And) camp, where camperss will be immersed in fun programs designed to work on all things acting. Young actors will practice performing exercises to hone their craft and enhance their character portrayal skills. they'll delve into script analysis, stage movement, and blocking to discover the nuances of storytelling, character motivation, and movement.

The pinnacle of this camp will be live performances, where campers can showcase their newly honed talents. Whether they're a seasoned performer or just starting, this camp will empower campers to become a versatile and skilled actor, ready to excel in every aspect of the theater.

Ceramics Academy
July 15-26 (2 weeks)

Instructed by Norwood's own Ms. Harvey!  

Ceramics is back for a two-week creative experience!  Artistic imagination will take shape in this exciting and popular class as campers mold and shape their own creations out of clay.  Under the guidance and experience of Norwood’s own Ms. Harvey, they will then glaze and fire their creations to take home!  Campers will also explore other forms of art with projects in other mediums, including creating a memory scrapbook of their experience.  
Computer Class

App Building and Coding Academy
July 15-19

Run by Vineyard App Camp! 
 
Has your camper ever wanted to make your own websites and apps? In this hands-on coding and tech camp, they’ll learn the skills of a coder and the mindset of an entrepreneur through building apps - their own app and also an app for local nonprofits. Campers will build apps and games weekly in the course and work on real web apps. Previous campers have been covered in multiple local news outlets for apps they've built for homeless shelters, veterinarians, and local climate nonprofits! Game Design academy 
July 22-26

Run by Vineyard App Camp! 

Has your camper ever dreamed of creating a video game? In this camp we’ll dive into game development. Campers will learn the fundamentals of game design, starting with HTML programming and building to more advanced concepts. They will use AI technology for storytelling and image creation during the course, infusing unlimited options into game creation. They’ll also work on enhancing writing skills by coding trivia challenges and immersive choose-your-own-adventure games. Campers will have the opportunity to collaborate on a group game. Together, they'll practice the techniques learned throughout the course to craft a game that can be shared with friends and family.  All devices for this academy are provided by Summer at Norwood.

Digital Comic Book academy 
July 29 - August 2

Calling all comic fans! This is your camper's chance to create one of their own! This academy will allow campers to use their imagination to write and design his own comic book story that consists of a plot, climax and conclusion. Campers will create a story board to develop ideas for comic book. Campers will learn and explore Photoshop tools and techniques, and use what they have learned to create a digital comic book. Campers will be able to design a main character for their comic, along with using familiar characters for the development of the comic book story.  All devices for this academy are provided by Summer at Norwood.

Broadcast Journalism academy 
July 29 - August 2

Have your camper unlock the power of the media and become a storyteller in the dynamic world of broadcast journalism! In our Broadcast Journalism Academy, campers will embark on an exciting journey into the heart of news reporting, storytelling, and multimedia communication. Whether they dream of being in front of the camera or behind the scenes, this camp will equip campers with the essential skills to thrive in the fast-paced world of broadcasting. From researching and writing compelling news scripts to honing their on-camera presence, campers will engage in and present their stories.  All devices for this academy are provided by Summer at Norwood.

Debate Academy
August 5-9

For our future lawyers and public speakers, or for anyone who enjoys a good hearty debate, this is the class for you. Campers will learn the powerful art of persuasion in a public forum allowing for some fun and engaging discussions around all sorts of issues relevant to middle school students.  Should homework be mandatory? Are video games too violent? Should junk food be allowed in schools? Should the voting age be lowered? Should grades be abolished? Is history important to study? Answers to these questions and more are up for debate!

String Orchestra Camp
August 12-16

Instructed by Norwood's own Mrs. Oviedo! 

We're excited to bring this one-week camp back to Summer at Norwood! The camp is open to any string instrument players (violin, viola, cello, or bass). Campers will hone their musical skills (sight-reading, rhythms, music theory, etc.) through a mix of sectional small-group work, orchestra rehearsals, and rhythm games each day. They will also have time to hang out and play other fun games! The week culminates with our Annual Orchestra Trivia Bowl and a casual performance showcasing the pieces the students have learned during the week. This is the perfect program for any strings musician who wants to improve their technique while having a blast! There is no After Care option for String Orchestra.
